Automatic App Tracking

Zero-config macOS menu bar app that tracks every application you use, window title, and category — passively, in the background.

xeve sits in your menu bar and automatically detects every app switch on your Mac. Window titles are captured so browsers resolve to specific websites. Apps are auto-categorized into productive, communication, entertainment, and more — no manual setup required.

01

Passive detection

Uses native macOS accessibility APIs to detect the frontmost application every second. No timers to start, no buttons to press.

02

Window title capture

Captures browser tab titles, terminal working directories, and editor project names so you see exactly what you were working on.

03

Auto-categorization

AI-powered classification sorts every app into categories like productive, communication, social media, entertainment, and reference.

04

Daily and weekly summaries

Aggregated productivity scores, top apps, screen time breakdowns, and context-switch counts rolled up daily.

05

Category overrides

Customize how any app is categorized. Mark Slack as productive or Reddit as research — your rules, your data.

The macOS tracker is a native Swift/SwiftUI menu bar app that polls NSWorkspace.shared.frontmostApplication every second. Window titles are read via the Accessibility API (AXUIElement). Data is batched and synced to Supabase PostgreSQL with row-level security. The app uses less than 0.1% CPU and under 30 MB of memory. Auto-updates are handled via the Sparkle framework with EdDSA-signed releases.

Does app tracking affect my Mac performance?

No. The tracker uses native macOS APIs and runs at under 0.1% CPU with less than 30 MB of memory. It is designed to be invisible — no lag, no slowdowns, no spinning beach balls.

What data is captured from window titles?

Window titles help resolve browser tabs to specific websites and terminal sessions to specific projects. For example, Chrome shows the page title, VS Code shows the project name, and iTerm shows the working directory. You can disable window title capture in settings.

Can I exclude certain apps from tracking?

Yes. You can exclude any app from being tracked in the menu bar settings. You can also recategorize apps — for example, marking YouTube as educational if you use it for tutorials.
